Course Description


We're rolling out the red carpet for Helen Mingjue Chen, visual development artist and production designer at Sony Pictures Animation! Helen's Artist Workout will take you on a 30-day journey as you tackle film studies from some of her favorite movies and delve into the process and thinking behind filmmaking. Exercises will include:

  • breaking down the principles of design, color, light, and composition
  • discussing film language and dissecting choices that were made for various films
  • training your artistic application and taking a broad approach to cinematic design
  • how to apply similar processes in film to your own work
  • and more!

For each workout, you'll receive a reference image, a sketch to get you started, and the final Photoshop file of Helen's work to keep as a reference.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Helen Mingjue Chen


Mingjue Helen Chen was born in Beijing, China and moved to the US at a very young age. She grew up in Minnesota, but later moved to San Francisco to study at the Academy of Art University along with her twin sister, Linda Chen.

Helen has worked for the Jim Henson Company, Paramount Animation, BaseFX, Walt Disney Animation, and is currently working as a Production Designer at Sony Pictures Animation. She has contributed to such films as "Big Hero 6," "Wreck-It Ralph," "Paperman," "Wish Dragon," and most recently worked as production designer on the upcoming Disney film "Raya and the Last Dragon," among many others. She has also contributed to several comic book titles, including Marvel's "Silk" and DC's "Gotham Academy" and "Batgirl."
