In this course, you will learn Andrea's approach to a traditional sculpture: how to make proper design choices, how to feel your way through your art, proper execution, and how to bring your creation to life! You will also learn a thorough understanding of form, shape, silhouette, proportion, harmony and stylization.
Andrea will review with you his own maquettes, as well as his personal sculptures. By the end of this class you will have a finished sculpture, and the skills to execute more advanced pieces and continue with your process.
As a sculptor, your work will be used as a blueprint, inspiration, or reference for Character Designers, Concept Designers, and especially for CG Modelers working in the gaming and film industries.
This class is suitable for all skill levels.
LESSON 1Armature from a Design
I will briefly introduce you to some of my professional and personal work and you will begin the process of translating a 2D animation into a 3D sculpt. I will talk about the idea of character sculpting, and how to analyze a drawing and make a plan. For this class, I chose a drawing from Carter Goodrich, who is one of the many inspirational artists in the industry today. I will share with you the process of creating the armature from Carter's drawing, which will lead us into your first assignment.
LESSON 2 Blocking In the Sculpt
In this lecture, I will show you how I block in the basic shapes of a sculpture while keeping in mind the importance and understanding of basic anatomy. You will learn how to translate and execute a 2D idea into a 3D graphic piece.
LESSON 3Refining Your Block-Ins
Now I will show you how to begin refining your block-ins as well as your shapes and forms. I will talk about how you can keep the design of your piece appealing and how to manage proportions. You will see how I use both of my hands and my various tools to manipulate my creations; you will start to see the limitations, challenges, and (hopefully) joy of working with clay!
LESSON 4 Reinforcing Forms and Refining Lines
Things start taking shape now. In this lesson, I will show you how to refine your lines and reinforce your forms so that your idea starts to become an actual sculpture! As we do this, we can start adding details as well, but obviously not everything all at once. I will talk about my thought process as art is coaxed from the clay.
LESSON 5Working the Winchester
In every sculpture, there is often a detail that is interesting enough to deserve your special attention. In this piece, that detail for me is the Winchester rifle. In this lesson, we will continue to work and recheck the overall sculpture to make sure we're staying on the path that we set out for ourselves. At the same time, we will refine the parts of the Winchester.
LESSON 6 Smoothing Techniques
Now we're coming into the final stages! In this lecture, I will show you the most efficient methods for cleaning up your sculptures, both by hand and with the recommended tools. You will begin to finalize your piece, paying special attention to the edges, planes, and proportion.
LESSON 7Cleaning Up
Continuing the clean-up of our sculpture's rougher edges, in this lesson I will finish up the pants of the figure and refine the face, adding lighter touches and small details to facial features to complete the profile expression of the character.
LESSON 8Finishing the Clay Sculpture
In this lesson, I will go over the process for finishing a sculpture: how to resolve any final design choices and other details that we haven't addressed yet.
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Andrea Blasich has spent over the last two decades working as a sculptor in the animation industry. He graduated at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan with a Master in Scenography. After a few years working for theaters in Milan, Italy, he started to sculpt for animation, which has always been his passion. In 1997, he landed a job as a sculptor for DreamWorks Animation and moved to the U.S. His clients include DreamWorks, Blue Sky Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, and Disney Animation Studios.
Andrea's personal sculptures and bronzes have been shown in exhibitions at Pixar, the Cartoon Museum in San Francisco, Nucleus Gallery in Los Angeles, and the Society of Illustrators in New York. He currently lives and works in San Francisco.
